Panen Jagung Bioteknologi dengan Keunggulan Ganda Pertama di Indonesia
Petani Sejahtera karena Budidaya Mudah, Murah, dan Meningkatkan Hasil Panen
JEMBER – Hari ini, Rabu (13/9/2023), Syngenta Indonesia melakukan panen jagung bioteknologi NK Pendekar Sakti di area Agrotechnopark, Universitas Jember, Jawa Timur. Jagung bioteknologi ini adalah jagung pertama di Indonesia yang memiliki keunggulan ganda, yaitu toleran terhadap herbisida glifosat dan tahan hama penggerek batang (Asian Corn Borer/Ostrinia furnacalis). Jagung bioteknologi ini lebih mudah dibudidayakan, ekonomis, dan memberikan hasil yang lebih tinggi.
Panen jagung ini merupakan bagian dari rangkaian acara Seminar Nasional Bioteknologi: Adopsi Bioteknologi untuk Akselerasi Ketahanan Pangan yang dilakukan sejak 12 September 2023. Seminar yang berkolaborasi dengan Universitas Jember ini menghadirkan para ahli di bidang bioteknologi, pemerintah, akademisi, mahasiswa, dan petani. Rangkaian acara ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pemahaman tentang pentingnya produksi pangan berbasis bioteknologi dalam mewujudkan ketahanan pangan Indonesia.
Dalam sambutan tertulisnya pada seminar tersebut, Dirjen Tanaman Pangan Kementerian Pertanian Suwandi menyampaikan, tahun 2023 ini, pemerintah menetapkan sasaran produksi jagung sebesar 30 juta ton pipilan kering dengan sasaran luas tanam seluas 5,262 juta ha. Terbatasnya sumber daya alam (SDA) memerlukan strategi yang tepat dalam pencapaian sasaran produksi tersebut.
Salah satu upaya yang dapat dilakukan adalah melalui peningkatan produktivitas. Produk hibrida diyakini dapat memberikan kontribusi positif bagi ketahanan pangan, karena antara lain ketahanan terhadap serangga, virus, mengurangi penggunaan pestisida kimia, kekeringan, perbaikan nutrisi, yang akhirnya berkontribusi pada peningkatan hasil.
Seperti diketahui bahwa potensi produksi jagung lokal hanya berkisar 3-4 ton/ha dan jagung komposit berkisar 5-7 ton/ha. Sedangkan potensi produksi jagung hibrida dapat mencapai 12-14 ton/ha.
“Jagung hibrida yang memiliki potensi hasil lebih tinggi dari varietas-varietas jagung komposit merupakan salah satu upaya untuk peningkatan produksi jagung,” demikian Suwandi.
Hal tersebut diamini oleh Abubakar, petani jagung asal Jember, Jawa Timur. Petani yang telah bertanam jagung sejak puluhan tahun silam itu mengisahkan, ketika menanam jagung lokal hasil panen yang didapat hanya sekitar 4 ton/ha. Namun, ketika mencoba menanam jagung hibrida bioteknologi hasil panen meningkat hingga lebih dari 11 ton/ha.
“Saya sudah coba menanam jagung hibrida bioteknologi dan hasilnya jauh meningkat. Yang lebih menyenangkan biaya produksi bisa ditekan hingga lebih dari 30% dan selama masa budidaya tenang dan nyaman karena terbebas dari ancaman hama penggerek batang yang menakutkan. Jagung bioteknologi dengan keunggulan ganda ini sangat ditunggu-tunggu petani,” tuturnya.
Sementara itu Fauzi Tubat, Seed Business Head Syngenta Indonesia menyatakan, bahwa produktivitas jagung hibrida bioteknologi dengan keunggulan ganda ini sekitar 10% lebih tinggi dibandingkan produktivitas jagung hibrida konvensional. Alhasil, apabila ditanam secara luas di Indonesia, varietas ini dapat mendongkrak panen jagung dari rata-rata nasional sebesar 5,3 ton/ha menjadi sekitar 7 ton/ha.
Salah satu varietas jagung hibrida bioteknologi yaitu NK Pendekar Sakti sendiri memiliki potensi hasil hingga sebesar 11,8 ton/ha pipilan kering.
“Kami berharap jagung hibrida bioteknologi dengan keunggulan ganda ini dapat memberikan hasil panen melimpah untuk petani. Dengan keunggulan ganda tersebut, varietas unggul ini dapat membantu petani menekan ongkos produksi, meningkatkan kualitas hasil panen dan menjadikan budidaya jagung lebih mudah dan nyaman,” tutur Fauzi Tubat, Seed Business Head Syngenta Indonesia.
Jagung bioteknologi pertama kali diperkenalkan saat Pekan Nasional (Penas) Tani dan Nelayan Andalan XVI pada bulan Juni 2023 lalu di Padang, Sumatra Barat. Sampai dengan saat ini ada tiga varietas jagung bioteknologi Syngenta yang sudah diperkenalkan kepada petani dan masyarakat, yaitu NK Pendekar Sakti, NK Sumo Sakti, dan NK Perkasa Sakti.
Seperti diketahui, jumlah penduduk Indonesia diperkirakan mencapai 318 juta jiwa pada tahun 2045. Kebutuhan pakan untuk menghasilkan protein hewani akan meningkat. Untuk memenuhi kebutuhan tersebut dibutuhkan sekitar 62 juta ton. Produksi jagung ditargetkan mencapai 70 juta ton sehingga diharapkan akan ada surplus 8 juta ton untuk diekspor. Untuk mencapai jumlah tersebut, luas panen minimal adalah 8-10 juta hektare dan rata-rata produksi jagung nasional harus mencapai 7-8 ton per hektare.
Menurut Fauzi, Syngenta melakukan riset dan inovasi selama bertahun-tahun untuk menemukan varietas jagung hibrida bioteknologi unggul yang dapat menjadi solusi terhadap tantangan petani sekaligus menjadi penopang tercapainya target produksi jagung nasional pada tahun 2045. Benih jagung unggul varietas NK Pendekar Sakti, NK Sumo Sakti, dan NK Perkasa Sakti ini diproduksi di dalam negeri dengan melibatkan lebih dari 70 ribu petani mitra yang secara bertahap diharapkan dapat memenuhi kebutuhan benih jagung nasional.
Lebih lanjut Fauzi menjelaskan bahwa jagung bioteknologi dengan keunggulan ganda pertama di Indonesia ini adalah wujud komitmen dan perhatian yang besar dari Syngenta terhadap persoalan-persoalan yang dihadapi petani. Syngenta telah lebih dari dua puluh tahun menghasilkan benih berkualitas serta membantu petani-petani di Indonesia menghadapi berbagai tantangan dan memberikan solusi yang terbaik untuk mereka.
